Not every great view requires a sunrise alpine start. Some of our favorite Blue Ridge payoffs come from trails you can knock out in a morning and still make brunch. Here are five that punch well above their difficulty rating — listed easiest to most demanding.
1. The warm-up loop (easy, ~2 miles)
Gentle grade, a short rock scramble at the top, and a 180-degree view of the valley. This is our go-to recommendation for first-timers and anyone hiking with kids. Early evening light here is unbeatable.
2. The waterfall out-and-back (easy, ~3 miles)
Mostly flat until a brief descent to the falls. Go after a few days of rain for the fullest flow, and wear shoes you don't mind getting wet near the base.
3. The ridge walk (moderate, ~4.5 miles)
A steady climb to a long, open ridge with views on both sides. The exposure means wind — bring a layer even on warm days. This is the one we send people to when they want to feel like they earned it without committing to a full day.
Before you go: Download an offline map. Cell service drops fast once you're off the main road, and a couple of these junctions aren't well signed.
4. The sunrise summit (moderate, ~5 miles)
Worth the early alarm. The trail is straightforward but relentless in the middle third. Start in the dark with a headlamp to catch first light from the top — then enjoy a mostly downhill walk back with the whole valley waking up below you.
5. The quiet alternative (moderate, ~6 miles)
When the popular trailheads are packed, this longer loop stays calm. Slightly more mileage, a fraction of the crowds, and a summit that feels like your own. Our favorite for a reset.
